Topic 10 Concept Guide

McCarthyism Impact on Society: The practice of faulty accusations without proper evidence is McCarthyism. This started with Senator Joseph McCarthy. During this time, many thousands of Americans were charged of being Communist.


Communist Witch Hunt & Impact on Accused: This was the Second Red Scare which brought many accusations of people being communist. People who were accused lost their job and went to trail and put in jail.

Space Race & Impact on Government Policies: A race between USA and Soviet Union to see who would get a satellite into space first. Soviet Union won and put Sputnik up in October 1957. In 1969 Niel Armstrong was put on the moon!

U.S Cold War Mindset: The mind set was to prevent attack. We wanted to play it safe. US vowed they would be the best, and would prevent the soviets from attacking us in any way.

Suburbs, Automobiles & Roads: American families were now able to move into the "American Dream" homes. Many highways were built to link the suburbs to the city. The houses were a single family home, and families were now able to own up to two cars instead of one car.

Baby Boom: The Baby Book occurred from from 1950 through 1955. This was when all the soldiers from World War II. These soldiers wanted to create their own families, and now could financially support them. About 7 babies were born approximately every second in the USA, during the peak of the Baby Boom.

Urban-Suburban Pattern: In the city was the low income families. In the suburbs was the middle income families, and in the outter suburbs was the higher income families. The farther out you went, the less houses there would be. They would also typically get larger.

G.I Bill: A bill that grants soldiers a set amount of money to return to school. The bill can also be passed down to any family member. You have ten years to use this bill.

Expansion of Middle Class & Product Affordability: After World War II, the economy was back up, and more jobs were available, thus causing more people to make more money. This caused the middle class to grow.
