MLK vs. Malcom X

Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X are extremely important people in the era of the Civil Rights Movements. Civil Disobedience was MLK's choice of acting. MLK believed that violence did not get you anywhere, it just made matters worse. He believed that if someone struck you, you would win the fight by just smiling at that person and showing them love after they hit you. On the other end, Malcom X believed in "by any means necessary." I believe that MLK's methodology is more successful because you always win no matter the situation. The own downside is that you would get hurt, and not be able to fight back. However, not fighting back showed that you were the bigger man. Another point is that, if a man fought back, it could be used against their own movement, and be published in the News Papers that they are very aggressive are extremely violent, because of course News Papers always use Yellow Journalism to exaggerate all their stories.

Meritocracy; Achieving a dream

Meritocracy is defined as "an elite group of people whose progress is based on ability and talent rather than on class privilege or wealth." I do believe that this is true, anyone who strives at a goal, can achieve it. The American dream is based off of this belief, if you work hard enough, you can become wealthy and achieve the dream. In a class divided, students were divided into two groups, each separated by eye color (Brown and Blue). One day one group would be labeled Superior and the other group inferior. In this case, students who were labeled superior scored much higher and were able to concentrate more in school related area, thus accomplishing more goals. If a student labeled superior believes he has a talent superior to the others, he will go on and progress more, like the definition for meritocracy states.

MLK and Civil Disobedience: Martin Luther King Jr. was an important leader through the Civil Rights Movement. MLK used Civil Disobedience, he would organize events where people would not fight back, they would just sit there and take the abuse. One major event was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This Boycott lasted 381 days. At the end of the boycott, Colored people were able to sit anywhere on the bus, did not have to give up their seat for white people, and did not have to pay a more expensive bus fare than the white people.

Power of the "Mob": A mob is a very large group of people, and as they say "there is strength is numbers." A mob usually determines how things turn out. This combined with Civil Disobedience always turned out in a win for the protesters.

Plessy v. Ferguson vs. Brown v. Board of Education: Plessy v. Ferguson is a law that states "seperate but equal." This refers to the facilities a person would use. Facilities such as bathrooms, water fountains, prisons, morgues, maternity wards, etc. Brown v. Board of Education overturned Plessy v. Ferguson in the year 1954 because it was considered unequal and unconstitutional.

Civil Rights Goals: The main goals for the Civil Rights Movement was to get equal rights for colored people. Equal rights in the areas of Education and public facilities were a major area that the great leaders, MLK and Malcom X targeted.

Eisenhower's role in Little Rock: President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne after Gov. Orvill Faubus sent 10,000 of the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the nine selected colored students to integrate into Central High School. The 101st Airborne would protect the nine students, and would allow them to get into the school.

Rights of the Accused: Gideon v Wainwright said that the 6th Amendment requires counsel for defendants who are unable to afford their attorney, taxes will pay for legal representation. Escobedo v Illinois said that criminal suspects have the right to counsel during police interrogation ("shut up and ask for an attorney!") Miranda v Arizona said that criminal suspects must be informed of their right to consult with a counsel prior to interrogation. 


Brown v. Board of Education: This over-ruled Plessy v. Ferguson because it stated that Plessy v. Ferguson was unequal and unconstitutional 


Chavez and the United Farm Workers: Chavez formed the UFW to help earn rights for migrant workers through Civil Disobedient acts. He organized a very famous strike, the Delano Grape Strike. He also participated in fasts to support different social issues. Though Chavez fought for Migrant rights, he was Anti-Immigration.


FHA & ADA - The Federal Housing Administration: US government agency that insured loans made by banks and other private lenders for home building and home buying. The goals are to improve housing standards and conditions, provide and adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans and to stabilize the mortgage market. The Americans with Disabilities Act: enacted by the US Congress in 1990. It is a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.

Purpose of Filibusters: Filibusters are used to prevent the opposing side from talking. A filibuster will talk continuously, for hours at a time. They are very successful in court. 

Sit-ins and Protest: A sit-in is when a group of people would go into a restaurant and sit at the chairs, they would be denied to be served, and the police would eventually come to remove them from the restaurant. The people, would of course put up a fight, not by fighting back but by acting as dead weight. After they would be removed, another group of people would come to replace them. This is very effective because it was always a win-win situation. The restaurant would have to close for the day thus causing them to lose business. Other forms of protest were bus boycotts, fasting, and civil disobedience acts.

Sexist Ad

Do you think it was intentional? Do you think they meant to be sexist? Or maybe you think they didn't realize it at the time? Well in this ad, published in the year 1951, they advertise the 'Florence Range.' It is the top notch range for cooking! Of course, in the ad they show several pictures, two of which you see women cooking, while the man just sits near the table waiting for his hot plate of food! How sexist is that? This ad is basically stating that it is women who are supposed to be in the kitchen. Not only do they put these pictures, but then they go ahead and post as their catch phrase, "favored by women... for cooking these dishes favored by men." It can not get any more sexist than that.

TV does have an influence on teenagers!

We all own it. You can not deny it. Most people have several in their homes, heck I'd say a majority of homes in the United States have a Television in every single room of the house!
Television is a very entertaining medium. They have a wide variety of shows. Educational channels such as Animal Planet, National Geographic, History Channel, etc. The television has a channel or show just for about every person in the world! They cover every single subject possible!
Though T.V. is very educational, it is the downfall of our future generations. Teenagers are very easily influenced. There are shows on television, mostly Reality Shows, that exhibit poor behavior in people. By teenagers watching this, they will want to be just as cool as the person on T.V. and act like them. This causes fads, and fads catch on, thus influencing a large population of the teenagers.

Timed write, Rockwell picture inspirtation

There they were, sitting at a restaurant for lunch. Mrs. Johnson was out to eat on a Sunday afternoon with her three sons. They sad and bowed their heads, praying and giving thanks for the food they were given. As they prayed, the two older boys saw a pretty walk into the restaurant. Their attention was now all on this girl, they put their heads up and stared at her across the room. This was the typical Johnson Sunday afternoon, they would all go out to eat as a family, and of course, the two older boys would always look at the girls.

McCarthyism Impact on Society: The practice of faulty accusations without proper evidence is McCarthyism. This started with Senator Joseph McCarthy. During this time, many thousands of Americans were charged of being Communist.

Communist Witch Hunt & Impact on Accused: This was the Second Red Scare which brought many accusations of people being communist. People who were accused lost their job and went to trail and put in jail.

Space Race & Impact on Government Policies: A race between USA and Soviet Union to see who would get a satellite into space first. Soviet Union won and put Sputnik up in October 1957. In 1969 Niel Armstrong was put on the moon!

U.S Cold War Mindset: The mind set was to prevent attack. We wanted to play it safe. US vowed they would be the best, and would prevent the soviets from attacking us in any way.

Suburbs, Automobiles & Roads: American families were now able to move into the "American Dream" homes. Many highways were built to link the suburbs to the city. The houses were a single family home, and families were now able to own up to two cars instead of one car.

Baby Boom: The Baby Book occurred from from 1950 through 1955. This was when all the soldiers from World War II. These soldiers wanted to create their own families, and now could financially support them. About 7 babies were born approximately every second in the USA, during the peak of the Baby Boom.

Urban-Suburban Pattern: In the city was the low income families. In the suburbs was the middle income families, and in the outter suburbs was the higher income families. The farther out you went, the less houses there would be. They would also typically get larger.

G.I Bill: A bill that grants soldiers a set amount of money to return to school. The bill can also be passed down to any family member. You have ten years to use this bill.

Expansion of Middle Class & Product Affordability: After World War II, the economy was back up, and more jobs were available, thus causing more people to make more money. This caused the middle class to grow.
